CHAPTER TEN

THROWING ON CLOTHES for an early afternoon horseback ride through bitter cold and snow was easy. Packing my bag for unknown travel after that horseback ride was more challenging. I hadn’t bothered to unpack the suitcase I’d brought with me from my house, so I knelt on the floor next to it and rummaged. It was easy to add some underwear to it, as well as another pair of jeans and some pajamas. I wanted to take my soft robe but I didn’t have room for it. I added a couple of hoodies, and a nice sweater. I stuffed my Ugg slippers in sideways and threw some basic toiletries in a plastic bag, just in case I did fly. Done. I scooped Luna up in one arm and threw the duffle over my other.

Ned and Carrie fell in behind me on the stairs. Luna mewled in protest when I shoved her, butt first, into her carrier, but I couldn’t leave her. Carrie would take her to her mom’s house with them because taking her on a plane wasn’t an option. If I was going to fly anywhere. I hadn’t made up my mind.

I set Luna’s crate next to my duffle and went into the kitchen to snag a cup of coffee. I scooted past Ned to get into the mudroom. We were all quiet, as if too afraid of the coming hour to talk at all. After a quick moment of debating between riding boots and my cozy knee high boots, I chose the riding boots. Being able to ride well was going to be more important than having toasty toes. I just hoped I didn’t end up having to walk through the snow in the dark. Even though it was the middle of the day, the thick cloud cover wasn’t letting much light through.

Ned joined me on the back porch. “Help me get everybody saddled?” He spoke in a hushed tone and I replied in a whisper.

“Sure. What about the luggage?”

“Your man is loading it in the cars now. He says no lights in the barn.”

I rolled my eyes but didn’t waste my breath on ‘he’s not my man.’ “Maybe we can use a flashlight without attracting too much attention?”

“Yeah,” Ned agreed. “We’ll use that old lantern you have out there.” We both pulled on our jackets. “Ready?” he asked and I nodded in confirmation.

It was still snowing and my breath caught in the cold wind. The horses nickered their welcome as we slipped through the barn door and brushed the snow from our jeans. We might be fooling the ghosts, but the horses knew when their people were on the move.

I found the lantern on its shelf in the tack room with an old box of matches next to it. When the wick was lit I turned the flame down low enough that no light would show through the cracks in the wood. Ned grabbed his saddle off the rack and moved towards Demon’s stall while I hefted my own and headed for Charlotte.
